On 14 March 2024, Caseware Africa made an important decision to retire their tax and secretarial products in 2025. Customers received an email informing them that after careful consideration Caseware Africa would discontinue their tax and secretarial products as these products no longer fit within the scope of their primary focus.

The history of Caseware Africa

Caseware Africa is a company that was established in 1994 under the name CQS Technology Holdings. Since then, the company has been committed to providing audit and accounting professionals with solutions that enable them to automate compliance engagements.

Konsise was also born out of CQS Technology Holdings and has become the independent software company it is today.

The March 2024 Caseware Africa tax announcement

After careful consideration and evaluation, they have decided to discontinue their tax and secretarial offerings on 30 June 2025. Whilst this is surprising to the industry, they have realized that the tax and secretarial solutions no longer fit within their core focus. This allows them to focus investment on developing and building future assurance and financial statement solutions driven by data analytics and powered by a cloud product.

What are the next steps for Taxware and Secware users?

  • Support for tax and secretarial solutions will continue until 30 June 2025.
  • All annual compliance updates for corporates, individuals, and trusts will be implemented in June/July 2024, as will all relevant provisional return updates until 30 June 2025.
  • From April 2024, all future renewals with effective dates of 1 July 2024 or beyond will be adjusted to align license end dates to 30 June 2025.

Where does that leave a Taxware or Secware user?

The first challenge for client when Caseware Africa retires their tax product is to find a suitable software product in South Africa. The next challenge is that most tax systems form part of a larger financial management platform or ERP system, so they lack critical features pertinent to the South African market, such as direct integration with the South African Revenue Service (SARS). We published an article at the beginning of 2023 that compared the functionality of various tax software platforms in South Africa that were aimed at the corporate market. This article was written based on publicly available information that was published on their websites at that point in time.
